Scheduled tribes are one of the backward sections and are officially designated as historically disadvantaged people in India. During British Rule they were known as the depressed class and later recognized in the constitution of India. Scheduled tribes are often termed as a community which is isolated from the mainstream population and living the life in their own traditional ways. In Jammu And Kashmir State the status of Scheduled tribes has been given to 08 communities in accordance with the constitution (Jammu and Kashmir) Scheduled tribes order, 1989 and further to 04 communities in the constitution (Scheduled tribes) order (Amendment) Act, 1991. Scheduled tribes have 8.6% of population out of total population in India and 11.9% of the total population of the J&K State (according to 2011 Census).
